Web Hosting
OK! You've got an account with an ISP to access the Internet, Isn't that all you need???
What's all this hosting stuff??? Don't get confused here...
- Dial-up or Broadband accounts with an Internet Service Provider (ISP) are for you to connect to the internet, so you can visit web sites and send & receive email.
- Hosting is how you put your business information onto a web server to publish your pages on the Internet for OTHER people to see.
Hosting (web server) facilities may be supplied by your ISP, but they are also available from providers like SBSN, who specialise in web hosting and domain services.

read on to find out the basics on domain names and web servers.
Establish Your Business Identity
The first thing you should do is establish your internet identity... or domain name.
Web sites that are accessible under www.yourowndomainname.com are generally a better measure of credibility on the Internet... and are certainly much more useful in branding than something like www.mydialupisp.com.au/~mybusiness.html.
Having your own domain name means that people will always be able to get in touch with you... For example, without a domain, if you change your dial-up ISP, you will lose contact with some customers because your email address changes. With your own domain name, it doesn't matter which dial-up ISP you use, because you continue to check mail@yourdomainname.com - nothing gets lost!
To get your own domain name is usually a two step process...
What type of Web Server do you need?
Once your domain name is registered, you'll need to get a web server organised so that people will be able to view your business information, and so you can begin using your email. These pages outline the basics about all of that.
